Planning & Site Selection
BeginnerBefore you lift a tool, get the planning right. Site selection, orientation, access, drainage, permissions, and design. This phase determines whether everything that follows is a joy or a nightmare.

Foundation & Floor
IntermediateThe foundation is everything. Get it level and square, and the rest of the build flows. Most small cabins use pier foundations — concrete pads or Sonotubes on compacted gravel. Simple, effective, and forgiving on uneven ground.

Wall Framing
IntermediateWhether you're stacking logs or building a stud frame, the walls define your cabin. Timber stud framing is the most accessible method for a first build — it's fast, forgiving, and easy to insulate. Log building is more romantic but requires significantly more skill.

Roof Structure
IntermediateGetting the roof on is the biggest milestone — once you're weathertight, everything else can happen at your own pace. A simple gable roof is the most forgiving design for a first build. Steeper pitch = better for shedding rain and snow.

Windows & Doors
IntermediateWindows and doors make it a building rather than a shelter. Getting them plumb, level, and properly sealed is critical for weatherproofing. For a cabin, off-the-shelf units from a builders' merchant are fine — no need for bespoke.

External Cladding & Weatherproofing
IntermediateCladding gives your cabin its character and protects the structure from weather. Timber cladding (larch, cedar, or treated softwood) is the classic cabin choice. A breathable membrane behind the cladding is essential.
2-4 days Save The cabin look - 07
Insulation & Vapour Barrier
BeginnerInsulation turns a seasonal shelter into a year-round cabin. For stud-framed walls, mineral wool between the studs is the simplest and most effective approach. A vapour barrier on the warm (inside) face prevents condensation in the wall.

Interior Fit-Out
IntermediateThe shell is up, you're weathertight, and now it's time to make it liveable. Internal wall lining, a wood stove, basic electrics, and simple plumbing if you want running water. This is where a cabin becomes a home.
