Windows & Doors
Windows and doors make it a building rather than a shelter. Getting them plumb, level, and properly sealed is critical for weatherproofing. For a cabin, off-the-shelf units from a builders' merchant are fine — no need for bespoke.
Buy windows BEFORE framing the rough openings. Measure the actual unit, then frame the opening 10mm larger on each side.
For log cabins, you MUST leave a settling gap above windows and doors — logs shrink as they dry. A sliding header with compressible insulation is the standard solution.
Use expanding foam sparingly around window frames — over-expansion can bow the frame and jam the window.
Fit a drip bar / flashing above every window and door. Water ingress at openings is the #1 cause of cabin rot.
Check rough opening dimensions against window/door unit size
Apply a waterproof membrane (DPM) sill to the bottom of the opening
Offer the window frame into the opening. Shim to get it perfectly plumb and level
Fix through the frame into the structural framing with appropriate screws
Check the window opens and closes freely after fixing — if not, adjust shims
Seal the gap between frame and structure with low-expansion foam
Apply internal and external trim / architrave
Fit flashing tape or drip bar above the window head
Repeat for all windows and the door(s)
FOR LOG CABINS: install a settling jack or compressible gap above the frame
