Foundation & Floor
The foundation is everything. Get it level and square, and the rest of the build flows. Most small cabins use pier foundations — concrete pads or Sonotubes on compacted gravel. Simple, effective, and forgiving on uneven ground.
The 3-4-5 triangle method ensures your corners are square. Measure 3m along one side, 4m along the other — the diagonal should be exactly 5m.
Piers should extend below the frost line in your region. In the UK, 450mm minimum depth is typical.
Use a builder's level or water level to get all pier tops perfectly level — this is the single most important measurement in the whole build.
Pressure-treated timber for the floor frame is non-negotiable. It's in contact with moisture permanently.
Clear and level the site. Remove topsoil, vegetation, and roots
Mark out the foundation using string lines and batter boards
Use the 3-4-5 method to ensure perfect square corners
Dig pier holes to required depth (below frost line). Space piers 1.2-1.8m apart
Add 100mm compacted gravel at the bottom of each hole
Set Sonotube forms or pour concrete pad footers. Level the tops precisely
Cure concrete for minimum 7 days. Keep moist
Install post brackets/anchors into pier tops
Lay pressure-treated bearer beams across piers. Check level obsessively
Install floor joists at 400mm centres using joist hangers
Lay tongue-and-groove structural floor boards or 18mm structural ply
Add insulation between joists if building for year-round use
