Planning & Site Selection
Before you lift a tool, get the planning right. Site selection, orientation, access, drainage, permissions, and design. This phase determines whether everything that follows is a joy or a nightmare.
Nik's full journey starts here. Site selection, first trees felled, the vision taking shape.
South-facing orientation maximises passive solar gain — critical for off-grid heating.
Check planning permission requirements. In the UK, cabins under 15m² on your own land may be permitted development — but always verify with your local council.
Walk the site in heavy rain before committing. Water flow, boggy patches, and drainage paths reveal themselves.
Design for your climate: steep roof pitch for snow load, deep overhangs for rain protection, raised foundation for flood risk.
Research local planning/zoning rules. In the UK, check permitted development rights with your local council
Survey your site: orientation, slope, drainage, access for materials, proximity to services
Choose your cabin style: log cabin, timber frame, SIPs panel, or hybrid
Sketch a floor plan — even a rough one. A 3x4m single room is a great starter cabin
Calculate a rough materials budget. Timber frame typically £5-15k for a small cabin
Plan your foundation type based on terrain: pier/post, concrete slab, or screw piles
Consider off-grid services: water source, waste disposal, solar/battery for electrics
Create a phased build schedule — foundation first, then floor, walls, roof, weathertight, interior
