Cooking & Water Setup

Beginner 1 day Eat well on the road

From a simple gas stove and jerry can to a plumbed sink with a foot pump — your cooking setup depends on how long you'll be out. For weekenders, keep it minimal and removable.

Pro tips
·

A single-burner butane stove (like a Campingaz Bistro) is the simplest cooking solution. Runs on cheap canisters, stores flat, no installation.

·

For a plumbed sink: a 12V water pump (Whale or Shurflo), a 20L fresh tank, and a 20L waste tank is the standard setup.

·

A foot pump is simpler than electric — no electrics needed, no pump noise, and they rarely fail.

·

Ventilation when cooking with gas is critical. Never cook with the vehicle sealed — crack windows or open the rear door.

Step by step
01

MINIMAL SETUP: Portable gas stove + collapsible washing-up bowl + 10L water jerry can

02

Stow stove securely when driving — it must not become a projectile

03

PLUMBED SETUP: Mount fresh water tank (20L) under the bed or in a cupboard

04

Mount waste water tank below the sink drain

05

Install sink into a worktop. Connect drain to waste tank via hose

06

Connect 12V pump (or foot pump) between fresh tank and tap

07

Wire pump to your fuse box (12V only, low draw)

08

Test for leaks at every connection

09

Add a simple gas drop-in hob if building a permanent galley (requires ventilation)
