Power Outage Preparedness
The UK averages 50+ minutes of power outage per customer per year, and severe weather events are increasing. A few simple preparations mean the difference between a stressful night in the dark and a mildly inconvenient one.
Covers lighting, heating, cooking, and communication during outages.
A USB power bank (20,000mAh) keeps your phone alive for 3-4 full charges. Your phone is your torch, radio, communication, and information source — keeping it charged is priority one.
LED candles and head torches are safer than real candles. If you do use candles, never leave them unattended and keep them away from curtains and furnishings.
If you have a gas hob, it still works in a power cut — you just need to light it manually with a match or lighter.
Know where your fuse box is and how to reset a tripped breaker BEFORE you need to do it in the dark.
LIGHTING: Head torch per person + spare batteries. LED lantern for communal areas. Candles + matches as backup
POWER: USB power bank per person (20,000mAh), kept charged. Consider a portable power station for extended outages
WARMTH: Extra blankets, sleeping bags, hot water bottles. Draught-proof one room as a 'warm room'
COOKING: If gas hob, keep matches/lighter accessible. Otherwise: camping stove + gas canisters (ventilation essential)
COMMUNICATION: Wind-up or battery radio for BBC emergency broadcasts. Phone charged via power bank
FOOD: Know what's in your fridge/freezer. Keep doors closed — a full freezer stays frozen 48 hours if unopened
WATER: Fill kettles and pans if you get warning. Electric pumps in some buildings mean no water during outages
Know your fuse box location. Know how to reset tripped breakers. Keep a torch near the fuse box permanently
