Home Security Basics
Most burglaries are opportunistic — the burglar tries doors and windows until one opens. Simple, cheap measures eliminate 90% of the risk. No need for expensive alarm systems when good locks, lighting, and habits do the job.
Burglars overwhelmingly use unlocked doors and windows. Lock up every time you leave, even for 5 minutes. This single habit prevents more burglaries than any alarm system.
Timer switches on lamps (£5 each) make the house look occupied when you're away. Vary the on/off times to look natural.
A visible security camera (even a dummy one) is a strong deterrent. Real ones like Ring or Blink are £30-80 and alert your phone.
Keep hedges below window height at the front (removes hiding spots) and above fence height at the back (prevents easy access).
LOCKS: Check all external doors have deadlocks or multi-point locking. Fit window locks on all ground-floor windows
LIGHTING: Motion-sensor lights on front and back. Solar-powered ones need no wiring — stick them up in 10 minutes
CAMERAS: Fit a visible camera at the front door (Ring Doorbell, Blink, or similar). Check phone alerts work
TIMERS: Put 2-3 lamps on timer switches to simulate occupancy when away
HABITS: Lock up every time. Don't leave keys in locks or near letterboxes. Don't advertise holidays on social media
GARDEN: Secure side gate with a padlock. Keep tools and ladders locked away (they help burglars)
VALUABLES: Don't leave laptop bags, car keys, or wallets visible from windows
NEIGHBOURS: Get to know your neighbours. A watchful community is the best security system there is
