Fix a Dripping Tap
5,500L wasted per year. Usually a worn washer or ceramic disc. Most satisfying quick fix — the silence afterwards is bliss.
Both washer and ceramic disc types. UK-focused.
Multiple turns = washer tap. Quarter turn = ceramic disc.
Isolation valve under sink: flathead screwdriver 90°.
Take old washer/cartridge to shop to match size.
Wrap spanner jaws with tape to avoid scratching chrome.
Turn off water via isolation valve under sink
Open tap to drain remaining water
Remove handle: prise off cap, undo screw
Adjustable spanner to undo headgear nut
Lift headgear out — washer or cartridge at bottom
WASHER: prise off old, press on new
CERAMIC: remove cartridge, replace with matching new one
Reassemble. Hand-tighten headgear, snug with spanner
Turn water on. Check leaks. Enjoy silence.
