Essential Knots

Beginner Practice session: 1 hr Infinite usefulness

Six knots will cover 90% of outdoor situations. Learn them until they're muscle memory — you should be able to tie them in the dark, in the rain, with cold hands. These six will build shelters, hang food, secure loads, and save lives.

Pro tips
·

Practice with a 2m length of paracord at home while watching telly. Repetition builds muscle memory.

·

The bowline is the 'king of knots' — it creates a fixed loop that won't slip under load but always unties easily. Learn this one first.

·

Paracord (550 type III) is the standard — it's strong (250kg breaking strain), light, cheap, and versatile. Carry 15-20m minimum.

·

Colour-code your guy lines — makes it much easier to adjust tarps in the dark.

Step by step
01

BOWLINE: The loop that never jams. Used for: attaching rope to a tree, rescue loop, guy line attachment

02

CLOVE HITCH: Quick attachment to a post or pole. Used for: starting lashings, hanging bear bags, ridgelines

03

TAUT-LINE HITCH: Adjustable tension knot. Used for: guy lines on tarps/tents — slide to tighten, holds under load

04

FIGURE-8 ON A BIGHT: Strong, easy-to-inspect loop. Used for: climbing, heavy loads, critical applications

05

SHEET BEND: Joins two ropes (even different thicknesses). Used for: extending rope, joining guy lines

06

TRUCKER'S HITCH: Mechanical advantage for tensioning. Used for: ridgelines, securing loads, clotheslines

07

Practice each knot 20 times before moving to the next

08

Then practice them all behind your back — that's when you've got it
